Kangla Fort
Manipur, India
Kangla Fort, located in Imphal, Manipur, India, is a historic and cultural landmark that has been the heart of Manipur's political and spiritual life for over two millennia. The name "Kangla" means "dry land" in the old Meitei language. Established around 33 CE by the mythical king Nongda Lairen Pakhangba, Kangla served as the royal seat and stronghold of the Meitei kings of the Ningthouja dynasty until 1891.
This ancient fort was not just a military structure but a thriving center for administration, arts, and traditional ceremonies, symbolizing royal authority and cultural identity.
Over the centuries, it was expanded and fortified with moats, walls, and gateways, reflecting a blend of indigenous architecture and influences from neighboring regions. The fort witnessed the rise and fall of kingdoms, foreign invasions, and resistance, including its capture by the British after the Anglo-Manipur War in 1891. After being used by the Indian Army until 2004, Kangla was restored and preserved as a heritage site, open to the public and tourists.
Today, Kangla Fort stands as a proud emblem of Manipuri heritage, featuring ancient temples, royal palaces, ceremonial gates, and iconic sculptures, hosting cultural festivals and traditional events that keep the history and spirit of Manipur alive for visitors and locals alike.
