Kangra Fort
Himachal Pradesh, India
Kangra Fort in Himachal Pradesh is one of India's oldest and most historically significant forts, built by the Katoch dynasty around the 4th century. Situated on a steep hill overlooking the Banganga and Manjhi rivers, it covers about 463 acres and is surrounded by high ramparts and massive walls that adapt to the natural contours of the hill.
The fort is known for its 23 bastions, seven massive gates, and a moat carved from solid rock, which acted as a strong natural defense. Inside, it houses several ancient temples, including the Ambika Devi Temple and Lakshmi Narayan Temple, reflecting both Hindu and Muslim architectural influences. The fort has withstood numerous invasions, including those by Mahmud Ghazni and Mughal emperor Jahangir, and was an important cultural center under Raja Sansar Chand, known for promoting Pahari art and literature.
After British troops took control in 1846, the fort suffered major damage during the 1905 earthquake but remains a symbol of resilience and historical importance in the Himalayan region.
