Kanthkot Fort

Kanthkot Fort, located near Kanthkot village in Gujarat's Kutch district, was built in the 8th century AD by the Kathis, a sun-worshiping tribe, on top of an isolated rocky hill with a circumference of about five kilometers.

The fort, historically known as Kanthadurg, served as a capital for various rulers including the Kathis, Chavdas, Vaghelas, and later the Jadejas. It features a blend of Hindu and Jain architectural styles, with remnants of temples dedicated to Kanthadnath, a Jain temple, and a Sun temple within its grounds.

The fort's walls are massive blocks of granite and stone, repaired over time with smaller stones, and its history includes sieges such as by Muzaffar Shah in the 15th century and eventual capture by the British in 1816, who partially destroyed it before Gujarat’s independence. Despite earthquakes and time taking a toll on its structure, Kanthkot Fort remains a significant example of the region's medieval heritage and architectural diversity.
