Verified Karhe Fort, Kanhdesh (MH)

Maharashtra, India

Karhe Fort (commonly called Karha, Karhagad, or locally “Bhavani Dongar”) is a medium-grade hill fort in Satana taluka of Nashik district, Maharashtra, standing in the former Baglan region on the Dundheshwar mountain range near the village of Karhe.

The fort rises to about 2,890–3,074 feet above sea level and is only 12–16 km from Satana town, making it a convenient short trek from nearby towns when combining visits to nearby watchtowers like Bista, Dundha and Ajmera. Historically, Karha was used as one of four small watchtowers (chaukis) in the Dundheshwar range, all within about 21 km of Satana, and served as an outpost for surveillance rather than a major stronghold, but the site is known to have been visited by local historians such as Girish Takle in 1987 who helped locate and identify the fort in its then-obscure state.

The fort has a small hilltop plateau with broken and scattered ramparts, remnants of old gates, a few carved stones and pillars, and a small Bhavani Mata temple that is the main shrine on the hill, while at the base there is a newly built Saptashrungi Mata temple and a small ancient Shiv temple in nearby Deolane village worth visiting.
