Kavaledurga Fort
Karnataka, India
Kavaledurga Fort in Karnataka, originally built in the 9th century and renovated in the 14th century by King Cheluvarangappa, is a remarkable hilltop fortress surrounded by dense forest.
It served as a stronghold for the Keladi Nayakas, prominent rulers of the region during the Vijayanagara Empire's decline. The fort features three lines of rock wall fortifications made of massive granite blocks, with each wall having fortified gateways flanked by guard rooms.
Inside the fort, there are ruins of a palace, temples, a pooja room, granaries, stables for elephants and horses, a kitchen with a stone stove, and a sophisticated water supply system including a stepped tank. The fort sits on a natural hillock, making its defense stronger, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Western Ghats.
It was strategically important throughout history, having been controlled by various rulers including Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Today, it stands as a testament to medieval military architecture, blending natural topography with intricate human craftsmanship.
