Kawagoe Castle

Kawagoe Castle is a flatland Japanese castle in the city of Kawagoe in Saitama Prefecture, originally built in 1457 by Ota Dokan and Ota Doshin for the Uesugi clan as a strategic base to counter nearby rivals and later to protect the northern approaches to the Kanto Plain.

It changed hands during the Sengoku period, passing to the Hōjō clan in 1537, then to Tokugawa Ieyasu after 1590, and for most of the Edo period it was held by twenty-one lords who were closely allied with the Tokugawa shogunate, making it an important defensive and trade stronghold north of Edo.

Much of the castle was lost over time, and today the only major surviving structure is the Honmaru Goten, a three-story lord’s palace built in 1848 that served as the residence and offices of the castle lord, recognized as a Saitama Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property and one of the few remaining Honmaru Goten in eastern Japan. 

The castle grounds are open as a public park with grassy areas, stone walls, and a small garden, and visitors can enter the Honmaru Goten to see spacious tatami rooms, interior displays of cultural materials, and a seasonal flower garden, while the nearby Nakano-mon (Middle Gate) ruins preserve another historic element of the original complex.
