Kenilworth Fort

Kenilworth Fort in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, India, was built between 1857 and 1861 by William Brett, a British Indian Civil Service officer and Collector of Salem.

The fort’s architecture was modeled after Kenilworth Castle in England, making it a unique example of a British castle style in India. Brett constructed it at his wife's request as a residence resembling her beloved Kenilworth Castle. Though grand and impressive, the fort had weak foundations and was declared unfit for habitation in 1935.

It later fell into ruin after being sold in 1936, with much of its exquisite woodwork and furniture dismantled. The fort is also associated with local legends, including a sacred snake that was believed to curse those who harmed it. Once an administrative center for British officers, the remaining ruins of Kenilworth Fort reflect its historical significance and unique blend of British and Indian colonial heritage.
