Kenjalgad
Maharashtra, India
Kenjalgad, also known as Ghera Khelanja Fort, is a historic hill fort in Wai taluka of Satara district, Maharashtra, India, perched at 4,269 feet on the Mandhardev spur of the Mahadev range, about 18 km northwest of Wai town.
Built possibly in the 12th century by Bhoja II of Panhala, it features a distinctive rhomboid shape with a prominent 30-40 foot high stone scarp visible from afar, rock-cut steps, remnants of walls, a ruined bastion, a dried cistern, and a small temple dedicated to Kenjal Devi atop its compact summit.
Captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1674 during a surprise assault, it later changed hands among Adilshah, Aurangzeb, Marathas, and British in 1818, now serving as an easy-to-moderate trek (30-40 minutes from base village Ghera Kenjal) popular for panoramic views of nearby forts like Raireshwar, Rohida, and Kamalgad, plus Dhoom Dam, accessible by road from Wai (25 km) or Bhor (17 km).
