Khajuraho is a small town in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district, best known for the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its medieval Hindu and Jain temples. Most of these temples were built between about 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty, and they showcase highly refined nagara‑style architecture with intricate stone carvings that cover every surface. While the site is often associated with its erotic sculptures, the carvings actually depict a wide range of themes including deities, daily life, celestial beings, and spiritual ideas, reflecting the cultural and religious world of the time. Today Khajuraho functions mainly as a tourist and pilgrimage hub, with a small modern town surrounding the surviving temples, an airport, and regular rail and road connections to major Indian cities.
