Khandheri Island
Maharashtra, India
Khandheri Island, officially known as Kanhoji Angre Island, is located about 5 kilometers off the coast of Maharashtra near Alibag, south of Mumbai.
The island features a fort built in 1679 by Shivaji Maharaj to oversee and control maritime routes and keep a check on his opponents, the Siddis of Murud-Janjira. The fort has two high hills, with defensive walls and fortifications constructed under the guidance of Maynak Bhandari.
Historically, it was the site of several battles, including attacks by Siddi Yakut Khan and the British Navy, and was later handed over to the Peshwas before coming under British control in 1818. The island has a few wells for water supply, a temple dedicated to Sri Betal, and old metal cannons, along with a notable two-story lighthouse built in 1867 by the British that still guides ships today.
The fort and island remain a symbol of Maratha naval power and history, offering scenic views and is being developed as a tourist destination.
