Khilla Ghanpur Fort
Telangana, India
Khilla Ghanpur Fort, located in Wanaparthy district of Telangana, was built in the early 13th century during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty. It was constructed by joining two mountains by notable rulers such as Gona Ganapa Reddy, Recherla Padma Nayakulu, and Malyala Gunda Dandadeeshudu.
This hill fort served as a strategic military base witnessing numerous battles involving the Bahamani, Vijayanagara, Bijapur, and Qutb Shahi kings. The fort features ruins of palaces, ministers' houses, and defensive cannons placed at its highest points. Named after the Kakatiya ruler Ganapathi Deva, Khilla Ghanpur is surrounded by natural rock formations and greenery, with two water ponds that once supplied drinking water to the fort's army.
Local legend mentions secret tunnels connecting the fort to the nearby village and Panagal Fort. Besides its historical significance, the fort offers trekking and adventure activities like rappelling and rock climbing, making it a popular destination for history and adventure enthusiasts.
