Kille Machindragad
Maharashtra, India
Kille Machindragad, also known as Machindragad Fort, is a hill fort located in the Walwa taluka of Sangli district, Maharashtra. Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1676, it was part of a chain of forts meant to protect Swarajya (Maratha sovereignty).
The fort is perched atop a solitary hill and served primarily as a surveillance post to monitor enemy movements. Over time, it changed hands between the Marathas, Mughals, and British. Today, only remnants of the fort remain, including embankments, bastions, cannons, water tanks, and the temple of Shri Machhindranath, reflecting a blend of religious significance and historical importance.
It is accessible via well-built trekking paths and offers panoramic views of its natural surroundings.
