King Haakon Bay
United Kingdom, United Kingdom
King Haakon Bay, part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands under United Kingdom administration, is a remote, narrow inlet approximately 13 km long and 4 km wide on the island's rugged southern coast, surrounded by steep mountains, glaciers, and exposed to fierce Southern Ocean swells.
Named in 1912 by Norwegian whaler Carl Anton Larsen after Norway's King Haakon VII, it gained fame as the 1916 landfall site for Ernest Shackleton and five crew from the James Caird lifeboat after their epic 800-mile voyage from Elephant Island during the Endurance expedition.
The crew sheltered at Cave Cove and Peggotty Bluff before Shackleton's grueling overland trek to Stromness for rescue, with the area now visited rarely by expedition cruises for its wildlife like seals and penguins amid untouched tussock grasslands and historical plaques.
