Kittur Fort
Kittur, Karnataka, India
Kittur Fort in Karnataka was built between 1660 and 1691 by Allappa Gowda Sardesai, ruler of the Kittur dynasty. It is famous as the seat of Rani Chennamma, a legendary woman warrior who led an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824, long before the 1857 Indian uprising.
The fort, constructed from black basalt rock, includes ruins of a palace with Peshwa-Islamic architectural styles and a unique Pole Star Vision Room used with an ancient telescope. Inside the fort are temples, water cisterns, and a well-maintained archaeological museum exhibiting weapons, idols, paintings, and relics from its history. The fort’s legacy is deeply tied to early resistance against British colonial rule, making it an important cultural and historical landmark in Karnataka.
