Verified Kokura Castle

Kitakyushu, Japan, Japan

Kokura Castle is a historic castle in central Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, famous for being the only castle in the prefecture with a keep and for its convenient location just a 10–15 minute walk from Kokura Station where the Shinkansen stops.

Originally built between 1602 and 1608 by Hosokawa Tadaoki and later made the residence of the Ogasawara clan, who ruled the area for about 230 years during the Edo period, the castle was destroyed by fire in 1866 during a clan war and was rebuilt in 1959 as a ferro‑concrete structure.

The five‑story tower is the sixth tallest among Japanese castles and has one of the largest ground‑floor areas, offering an observatory on the fifth floor with panoramic views of Kitakyushu and nearby modern attractions like Riverwalk Kitakyushu. Inside, the castle features a high‑definition theater on the first floor and exhibitions on Kokura’s history, while the surrounding Katsuyama Park with about 300 cherry trees is a popular spot for hanami during early April, especially at night when lanterns are lit.

Kokura Castle is closely linked to samurai legend as the place where Miyamoto Musashi stayed most often and where the famous Battle of Ganryu Island against Sasaki Kojiro took place, making it both a historic landmark and a vibrant cultural destination.
