Konark Sun Temple
Konark, Odisha, India
Konark Sun Temple is a 13th‑century Hindu temple in Konark, on the eastern coast of Odisha, India, dedicated to Surya, the Sun God. Built by the Eastern Ganga dynasty, it is designed as a massive stone chariot with twelve pairs of elaborately carved wheels and once‑pulled by seven horses, symbolizing the movement of the sun across the sky. The temple is renowned for its intricate stone carvings depicting gods, dancers, musicians, and daily life, as well as its culmination of Kalinga‑style temple architecture. Though the main sanctuary’s towering superstructure has collapsed over time, the surviving entrance hall and outer walls remain a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major attraction on Odisha’s cultural circuit.
