Kondapalli Fort

Kondapalli Fort, located in the Krishna district near Vijayawada, India, was built in the 14th century by Prolaya Vema Reddy of the Kondavidu Reddi dynasty, initially as a leisure palace and business center.

The fort is spread over 18 square kilometers on a hill and is known for its strong granite walls, three mighty gates including the Dargah Darwaza made from a single granite slab, and the Tanisha Mahal palace between two hills. It has a rich history, having been ruled by various dynasties such as the Reddi kings, the Gajapati rulers of Odisha, the Vijayanagara Empire under Krishna Deva Raya, Qutb Shahi sultans, and later the British who used it as a military training base.

The fort is also surrounded by dense forests famous for medicinal plants and wood used for crafting traditional Kondapalli toys, which are famous worldwide. The site offers scenic views of the valley and nearby Kondapalli forest, making it a popular tourist attraction that combines history, architecture, and natural beauty.
