Verified Kondaveedu Fort

Andhra Pradesh, India

Kondaveedu Fort in Andhra Pradesh, built primarily in the 14th century by Prolaya Vema Reddy of the Reddy dynasty, served as the capital after moving from Addanki.

The fort is the largest hill fort in the state, sprawling over 4 to 5 square kilometers on a range of hills. Its architecture combines military strength with aesthetics, featuring massive granite stone walls, two main three-storied gates called Kolepalli Darwaza and Nadella Darwaza, and 23 bastions. Inside are ruins of palaces, temples including the Gopinathaswami temple, granaries, wells, and inscriptions totaling 110 meters in length on rock pillars.

The fort also demonstrates advanced water management systems with interconnected wells and tanks that still support groundwater recharge today. It witnessed several historical rulers including the Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Empire, Gajapatis, and Golconda Sultans, reflecting a rich layered history.

Today, Kondaveedu Fort remains a prominent cultural and historical site, showcasing medieval military engineering and the environmental foresight of its builders.
