Verified Kottappuram Fort

Kodungallur, Kerala, India

Kottappuram Fort, also known as Cranganore Fort or Kodungallur Fort, is a historic Portuguese fort built in 1523 at the mouth of the Periyar River in Kerala.

It was strategically located to control maritime traffic along the Malabar Coast and played a crucial role in regional trade and military defense. The fort was enlarged in 1565 but was captured and damaged by the Dutch in 1663 during a fierce battle.

Later, it became part of the Nedumkotta fortifications under Travancore's rule, serving as a defense against Tipu Sultan's invasions. The fort is now mostly in ruins but is a significant archaeological and heritage site under the Muziris Heritage Project, with ongoing preservation and excavations revealing remnants of its past importance.

Its location near the river and Arabian Sea offered excellent control of navigation routes, and the fort’s remains include restored walls, a memorial stone, and traces of a once-thriving fort settlement.

Visitors today can experience its historical ambiance along with views of the backwaters and surrounding landscape, reflecting Kerala’s rich colonial and trading history.
