Kulang Fort
Kurungwadi, Maharashtra, India
Kulang Fort, located near Kurungwadi in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, sits on the western side of the Kalsubai hill range at about 4,600 feet.
It is one of three forts—Alang, Madan, and Kulang—that historically guarded the region and protected trade routes between Nashik and Kalyan. Originally believed to have been built by the Satavahanas, Kulang has changed hands through various rulers including the Mughals, Marathas, and eventually the British, who captured it in 1818 but left the fort’s steps intact.
The fort features rock-cut steps, ruins of palaces and a wada, several water cisterns, caves that can accommodate visitors, and natural rock formations including a significant gully with intricate water management systems. From the top, panoramic views of nearby forts, villages, and reservoirs unfold, and its rugged terrain and historical architecture make it a challenging and rewarding destination for trekkers and history enthusiasts alike.
