Kuniyoshi Castle Ruins
Mihama, Japan
Kuniyoshi Castle, built in 1556 by Awaya Katsuhisa, was a mountain fortress in eastern Mihama Town, Fukui Prefecture, serving as a key defense point against invasions from the Echizen Asakura clan during the Sengoku period. Despite being besieged repeatedly by thousands of Asakura troops, the castle never fell, thanks to its steep mountain terrain and difficult encirclement.
The castle also supported Oda Nobunaga’s campaign against the Asakura in 1570 and developed a castle town at its base during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s era. It was abolished around 1615 due to an edict ordering smaller castles to be dismantled. Excavations have revealed stone walls, foundations, and terraces, revealing large-scale renovations under Kimura Sadamitsu, a vassal of Hideyoshi. Today, the ruins are a designated historic site, attracting visitors for its scenic views and well-preserved castle town atmosphere.
