Kunjargad
Maharashtra, India
Kunjargad Fort, also known as Kombad Fort, is a hill fort located in the Balaghat hill range in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India.
It is situated at an altitude of around 4,200 feet and is named after the Sanskrit word "kunj," meaning elephant, because the fort's shape resembles a giant elephant. The fort is accessed primarily from Vihir village, which lies in the Mula river basin, or alternatively from Fofsandi village in the Mandvi river basin.
Kunjargad has historical significance as a resting place for Shivaji Maharaj in 1670 after the war of Dindori, where the Maratha forces rested and treated the injured. The fort features remains of fortifications, caves, a rainwater reservoir, idols including Lord Hanuman, a Shiv Ling, and a narrow tunnel known as Bhuyar, which is about 45 feet long and quite tight. Due to heavy monsoons and dense fog during the rainy season, it is best visited post-monsoon during the flowering season.
From the fort, trekkers can enjoy scenic views of nearby Harishchandragad Fort and the surrounding ranges. The trek to Kunjargad is considered moderate, with steep climbs taking around 2.5 to 3.5 hours from the base villages. The fort area is accessible to the public and is a popular trekking destination for adventurers interested in history and nature.
