Kurdugad Fort
Maharashtra, India
Kurdugad Fort, also known as Vishramgad, is a historic hill fort situated in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. Believed to have been constructed during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj with help from Sardar Baji Pasalkar, the fort functioned as a watchtower protecting trade routes between Pune and the Konkan coast.
It stands about 2200 feet above sea level, surrounded by thick forests and hill slopes, and is named after the goddess Kurdai, whose temple is located at its base. The fort has a distinctive spire-like summit with natural caves and ruinous bastions. It was later controlled by the Peshwas but gradually lost importance during British rule.
The fort offers panoramic valley views, and visitors can explore the remains of water tanks, stone walls, and religious shrines, making it a compact but significant site with deep historical and cultural roots.
