Verified Kushima Castle

Ōmura, Japan, Japan

Kushima Castle also called Ōmura Castle, is a coastal flatland castle in the city of Ōmura, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, built on the tip of a small peninsula (Kushima) that juts into Ōmura Bay.

It was constructed in 1598–1599 by the 19th lord of the Ōmura clan, Ōmura Yoshiaki, as a strategic stronghold to protect the clan’s maritime domain and control trade and defense in the bay, with three stone piers unusually built into the castle to serve as docks for ships. The castle had three main enclosures: the honmaru (main citadel) on higher ground surrounded by stone walls and sea-water moats, the ninomaru (second enclosure) with a large dry moat, and the sannomaru (third enclosure) at the peninsula’s tip, which housed storehouses and ship-related offices, though it never had a large main keep or tenshu.

After the Meiji Restoration, the castle was dismantled in 1871, and the site was transformed into Ōmura Park, a public park famous for seasonal flowers, especially the natural monument Ōmura-zakura cherry trees and iris blooms, and selected as one of Japan’s top 100 cherry blossom spots. Within the park, the former honmaru area now hosts the Ōmura Shrine and monuments to the castle’s founder and last lord, while the old stone walls, moats, and gate locations can still be walked along, making Kushima Castle Ruins a quiet blend of history, shrine culture, and nature right in the heart of Ōmura.
