Kuwabara Castle Ruins are the remains of a 15th‑century mountain castle (yamashiro) in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, also known as Takatoya Castle or Suisho Castle, and designated as a prefectural historic site.

Originally built by the Kuwabara clan, the castle later became a satellite fort of the nearby Uehara Castle under the Suwa clan, who ruled the Suwa region and served as high priests of the great Suwa Grand Shrine. In 1542, when the powerful Takeda Shingen of Kai advanced into Shinano, the Suwa lord Suwa Yorishige retreated from Uehara Castle to Kuwabara but was quickly surrounded; after a two‑day siege the castle fell.

Yorishige and his two brothers were taken to Kōfu and later forced to commit seppuku, effectively destroying the Suwa clan’s independent power. Today only earthworks such as trenches and terraces survive on the mountain ridge, with no standing buildings, and the site is generally visited together with Uehara Castle as one of two classic examples of mountaintop castles in the Suwa area, accessible by a short taxi ride from Kamisuwa Station on the Chūō Line.

The ruins are a quiet, largely undeveloped historic spot that illustrates how local mountain castles were used in the Sengoku period as final strongpoints and how rapidly the rise of Takeda Shingen reshaped the political map of Shinano Province.
