Kyoto Botanic Gardens
Kyoto, Japan
The Kyoto Botanical Gardens, established in 1924, are Japan’s oldest public botanical gardens and cover about 24 hectares near the Kamo River in Kyoto. The gardens house approximately 12,000 plant species totaling around 120,000 individual plants, including a rich collection of cherry trees, maples, hydrangeas, irises, roses, and lotuses that bloom seasonally.
The gardens feature several specialized areas such as a bamboo garden, bonsai exhibit, camellia garden, and a large conservatory with tropical plants and rare species. The conservatory, built in 1992, is one of the largest in Japan and includes diverse climate zones like rainforests, deserts, and alpine environments. Visitors enjoy seasonal displays such as cherry blossoms in spring and colorful autumn foliage, as well as educational programs and family-friendly events.
