Loch Ness is a large, deep freshwater lake located in the Scottish Highlands, about 23 miles (36 km) long and reaching a depth of 788 feet (240 meters), holding more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. Situated in the Great Glen west of Inverness, it is part of the Caledonian Canal system and is famous worldwide as the legendary home of "Nessie," the Loch Ness Monster, with numerous sightings reported since the 1930s despite no scientific proof of its existence. The loch's dark, peaty waters are poor in plant life due to its extreme depth and temperature, and its shoreline features dramatic scenery including the ruins of Urquhart Castle, a popular historic landmark visitors can explore. While the monster myth draws over a million tourists annually for boat cruises and visits to the Loch Ness Centre, the area is also cherished for its natural beauty, wildlife like otters and deer, and peaceful walks along the South Loch Ness Trail. The River Ness flows from its northern end to Inverness and then to the Moray Firth, completing the loch's connection to the sea.
