Verified Lodhi Fort (Purana Qila)

Ludhiana, Punjab, India

Lodhi Fort, locally known as Purana Qila, is a historic citadel in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, built over 500 years ago by Sultan Sikandar Lodi of the Lodhi dynasty in the 15th century.

Situated on the banks of the Sutlej River, the fort was a key military stronghold overseeing the region and controlling access to the empire via the main route that later became the Grand Trunk Road. Its architecture reflects a blend of Islamic and local Punjab styles, featuring massive stone walls, bastions, gates, and a sprawling layout.

The fort flourished under Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the British before falling into neglect, although it remains a state-protected monument since 2013. Historically significant as the foundation of Ludhiana—originally named Lodi-ana—the fort also contains legends of underground tunnels linking it to Phillaur Fort.

Despite deterioration and urban encroachment, the fort continues to represent Ludhiana’s vibrant heritage and offers panoramic city views from its elevated walls.
