Lohagad Fort
Maharashtra, India
Lohagad Fort in Maharashtra is a historic hill fort situated near Lonavala, standing at 1,033 meters above sea level. Originally built by the Lohtamia dynasty in the 10th century, it later came under the control of various rulers including the Chalukyas, Bahmanis, Mughals, and most notably the Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century.
Shivaji used the fort as a treasury to store the spoils from his Surat campaign and strengthened its defenses by adding gates, walls, and bastions. The fort features four main gates—Ganesh, Narayan, Hanuman, and Maha Darwaja—with intricate carvings and impressive masonry reflecting influences from different periods. Its most famous feature is the "Scorpion’s Tail," a narrow, fortified spur offering panoramic views.
The fort also served as a refuge for Peshwa Nana Phadnavis in the 18th century, who made significant additions including step-wells and water tanks. Lohagad was captured by the British in 1818 after heavy artillery shelling, marking the end of Maratha control. Today, it is a popular trekking destination and protected monument, known for its natural beauty, architectural significance, and rich history.
