Lohagarh Fort
Rajasthan, India
Lohagarh Fort, meaning “Iron Fort,” is a strong 18th‑century fortress in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, built under the direction of Maharaja Suraj Mal of the Jat rulers, with construction started around 1732 and completed in about eight years on an artificial island surrounded by a wide, deep moat.
The fort was designed for maximum strength rather than decoration, with thick brick‑and‑mortar outer walls, an inner mud core that could absorb cannon fire, high ramparts, and 34 bastions, and it became famous for remaining unbreached despite repeated heavy assaults by the British East India Company, including failed attempts during the Siege of Bharatpur in 1805 and only finally being captured in 1826 under Lord Combermere.
Today the Lohagarh Fort is a partially preserved heritage site under the Archaeological Survey of India, with a government museum displaying arms and armor, and several notable structures inside such as Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal, Jawahar Burj, and Fateh Burj, which were built to mark victories over the Mughals and the British. Visitors can enter through two main gates, the Ashtadhatu (eight‑metaled) gate on the north and the Chowburja (four‑pillared) gate on the south, and explore the fort’s modest but powerful architecture, courtyards, temples, and open spaces that offer a clear sense of the historical resilience and strategic skill of the Jat rulers of Bharatpur.
