Lowestoft
United Kingdom, United Kingdom
Lowestoft is a coastal town and traditional seaside resort in Suffolk, eastern England, famous for being the most easterly settlement in the United Kingdom and the first place in Britain to see the sunrise.
Located on the Sunrise Coast, it originated as a Danish settlement on Lowestoft Ness and is the main town in the East Suffolk district, situated 38 miles north-east of Ipswich and 22 miles south-east of Norwich. The town has wide, sandy beaches and two piers—Claremont Pier and South Pier—both offering restaurants, cafes, and amusement arcades along the seafront.
Historically, Lowestoft grew as a fishing port and seaside resort after the railway arrived in 1847, and from 1757 to 1802 it was known for manufacturing Lowestoft china, a soft-paste porcelain. As fishing declined in the 1960s, North Sea oil and gas exploitation took over as the main industry, and the town now has light industry alongside its tourism appeal.
The town offers numerous green spaces including Nicholas Everitt Park with the museum, Sparrow's Nest Park with a war memorial, and beaches ideal for sunbathing, plus it provides gateway access to the Norfolk Broads for watersports like powerboat racing and canoeing. Lowestoft is also the birthplace of renowned composer Benjamin Britten and has good transport links by road and train to Norwich and Ipswich.
