Magadi Fort
Magadi, Karnataka, India
Magadi Fort, located in Magadi town near Bengaluru, Karnataka, was originally built as a mud fort by Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru, in 1537.
It played an important role as a defensive and administrative center for Kempegowda and his successors, serving as the capital of their territories for nearly ninety years. In 1761, Hyder Ali converted the mud fort into stone, and Tipu Sultan completed its construction in 1791. The fort later came under British control after the Third Anglo-Mysore War.
Inside the fort is the Rameshwara temple, featuring Vijayanagara-style architecture with granite pillars and a Garbhagriha. The fort area also includes Satyanarayana Swamy temple and a prominent shrine called Shikhara Basava, known for its lofty tower and visibility over the surroundings.
Though parts of the fort are now in ruins, it remains a significant historical landmark connected to the foundation and growth of Bengaluru.
