Verified Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum

Madhya Pradesh, India

Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum, established in 1955, is located in a palace built by Maharaja Chhatrasal, the founder of the Bundela dynasty in Madhya Pradesh.

The museum showcases eight galleries with rich collections of inscriptions, copper plates, sculptures, and artifacts from the Kalchuri, Gupta, Chandela, and Bundela periods. It includes a devoted Jain gallery with idols of Tirthankaras, galleries dedicated to Saiva and Shakta sculptures, and a Vaishnava gallery exhibiting sculptures of Vishnu in various forms.

The museum also displays traditional weapons like swords, shields, and cannons, along with paintings and various art objects made from ivory, terracotta, metal, and wood. Open-air displays feature medieval period sculptures, while a library on-site holds around 2300 historical and archaeological books.

This museum provides a comprehensive look into the history, art, culture, and legacy of the Bundelkhand region and its ruler Maharaja Chhatrasal, who famously resisted Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb to establish his independent kingdom.
