Verified Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort Phillaur

Phillaur, Punjab, India

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort, also known as Phillaur Fort, is situated on the Grand Trunk Road in Phillaur, Punjab, India.

Originally constructed during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as an imperial sarai (rest house) in the 17th century, it was transformed into a formidable military fortress around 1809 by Maharaja Ranjit Singh with the help of his French and Italian generals.

The fort was strategically built to secure Punjab and counter British expansion, featuring four bastions, high walls, watchtowers, and a European-influenced architectural style. After the Sikhs were defeated in the Battle of Aliwal in 1846, the British took control of the fort and used it as an army base until 1890 when it was transferred to civil authorities to serve as a police training center.

The fort is also home to the revered shrine of Pir Baba Abdullah Shah Ji, making it a spiritual site as well. Today, it functions as the Punjab Police Academy while preserving its rich historical and architectural heritage, reflecting its importance in Punjab’s military and cultural history.
