Maharashtra, India
Mahimangad Fort, located in Satara District of Maharashtra, India, is one of the chain forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to guard his eastern frontier. Situated on a hill about 3,200 feet high, the fort features a triangular flat top with steep slopes and remnants of strong fortification walls and bastions.
Visitors can see a carved elephant sculpture at the fort entrance, a temple of Lord Hanuman, water tanks that hold water year-round, and secret doors called “Chor Darwaja.” The fort was originally garrisoned by about seventy-five Ramoshis and Mahars, and the surrounding land was administered as part of the fort’s territory.
