Mahipal Gad
Maharashtra, India
Mahipal Gad, located near Belgaum on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka, is an ancient hill fort situated in the Chandgad taluka of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. The fort is surrounded by dense evergreen forests and is historically significant, believed to have been built or established during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj in the 16th or 17th century.
On the way to the fort lies the Vaijnath temple, an impressive 11th-century structure built in the Hemadpanti architectural style, along with the temple of goddess Aarogya Bhavani.
The fort itself features rock-cut caves, a large water cistern, bastions, and ruins of temples dedicated to deities Ambabai and Shiva. Despite its grandeur and historical value, the fort is in a state of disrepair with limited maintenance. Mahipal Gad offers scenic views, rich natural surroundings, and a glimpse of Maratha history and architecture.
