Mahipatgad Fort

Mahipatgad Fort, located near Dahivali in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, is one of the largest hill forts in the state, covering around 120 acres with an elevation of about 3,090 feet.
The fort is situated on a spur along with the forts Suamargad and Rasalgad, forming a natural defensive line in the Western Ghats. Originally built in the 15th century by the Adilshah of Bijapur, it was captured by King Shivaji in 1661 and later controlled by the Peshwas before coming under British rule in 1818. The fort features six gateways and battlements, though many are now in ruins.
Besides strategic military features, it contains remnants of temples, rock-cut Shivlingas, stables, and large water wells that still provide drinking water. The surrounding forest is rich in wildlife and vegetation. Access is through a village at the foot of the fort, with trekking routes popular among visitors, and the fort offers scenic views of the nearby regions.
