Mailgad Fort
Raipur, Maharashtra, India
Mailgad Fort, also spelled Mailgad or Mahelgad, is the only hill fort in Buldhana district, Maharashtra, located in Jalgaon Jamod taluka on the Satpuda range at the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, with Raipur village as its base about 18 km from Jalgaon Jamod and around 50 km from Khamgaon via Nandura.
The fort stands at about 1,750 feet (around 530 meters) above sea level and covers roughly 5 acres on the summit, and is considered a medium-grade fort with a trek that typically takes about 30–60 minutes from the base village, passing through a scenic path of ups and downs in the Satpuda hills.
Mailgad is believed to have been built or rebuilt in the 18th century by the Nawab of Achalpur (appointed by the Nizam of Hyderabad), though the presence of caves, pillars, and rock-cut structures suggests the site may have existed earlier, and it historically protected the important route from Burhanpur in the north to Vidarbha.
