Makalidurga Fort
Bangalore, India
Makalidurga is a hill fort located about 60 kilometers north of Bangalore near the village of Makali in the Bengaluru rural district.
It stands at an altitude of approximately 1,117 meters above sea level and features ruins of an old fort alongside a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva with a statue of Nandi at the summit. The hill is known for its moderately difficult trekking trails with rocky and uneven paths, attracting adventurers and trekkers, especially from September to February when the weather is most favorable.
Historically, Makalidurga served as a granary storage for a late 1800s palegar named Makaliraya, which is how it got its name. The site was significant during the Vijayanagara Empire for military exercises and later came under the control of Shahaji, the father of Shivaji, before being captured by Kempe Gowda.
The hill is surrounded by natural beauty with date plants, lemongrass, and stone formations, offering scenic views of lakes, curvy roads, and railway tracks nearby. Night trekking is a popular activity here, with campers often starting late at night and descending by early morning, but it requires professional guidance and preparation.
The place combines historical importance, natural beauty, and adventure in one accessible destination from Bangalore.
