Verified Malegaon Fort

Maharashtra, India

Malegaon Fort in Maharashtra, India, was constructed in 1740 by Naro Shankar Raje Bahadur, a general of the Peshwa, who was appointed as an agent in Malwa.

The fort is situated on the north bank of the Mausam river and covers about five acres with strong square-shaped double ramparts, nine bastions, and a deep moat fed by the river. Built over 25 years with craftsmen brought from Surat and northern India, its architecture shows North Indian influences, including beautifully carved wooden gates and stone staircases.

The fort features thick walls with an inner height of around 60 feet and included structures like the Rangmahal (a palace), stables, rooms for soldiers, and wells. Historically significant in the Maratha era, the fort withstood multiple sieges, including an important battle in 1818 during the British conquest when it was defended by Arab forces. Today, the fort remains in good condition and is easily accessible, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's military and architectural heritage.
