Malhargad/Sonori Fort
Kalewadi, Maharashtra, India
Malhargad, also known as Sonori Fort after the village at its base, is a hill fort located near Saswad, about 30 kilometers from Pune, Maharashtra.
Built between 1757 and 1760 by Peshwa Sardar Krishnaji Madhavrao Panse and Bhivrao Yashvant, who was chief of the Peshwa's Tofkhana (artillery department), it was the last fort constructed by the Marathas. The fort sits in the Bhuleshwar range of the Sahyadri mountains and was strategically built to monitor the Dive Ghat on the Pune-Saswad route.
The fort features two temples side by side—one dedicated to Lord Khandoba and the other to Lord Mahadeva. The village of Sonori still has the ruins of Panse's palace. From the fort's summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of nearby locations like Jejuri and the Parvati Hills. The fort is in good condition and serves as a historical reminder of the Maratha era's architectural and military planning.
