Manyo Botanical Garden in Nara, also called the Kasuga Taisha Garden, is a historic poetry-themed garden next to Kasuga Shrine that was opened in 1932.
It grows around 300 plant species mentioned in the Manyōshū, Japan’s oldest poetry collection, and each plant is labeled with related poems so visitors can connect the plants with classical literature. The garden also has special areas such as a wisteria garden, camellia garden, iris garden, and a grain garden, making it especially attractive in spring when the wisterias bloom.
