Matsumae Castle Ruins are the remains of Japan’s northernmost and last traditional Edo‑period castle, located in Matsumae on the southern coast of Hokkaido, and they are best known today as the heart of Matsumae Park, one of the country’s top cherry‑blossom sites.

The site was first established as a castle in 1606 by daimyō Matsumae Yoshihiro under Tokugawa orders to defend Hokkaido and Japan’s northern frontier, served as the main residence of the Matsumae clan, and was rebuilt in 1854 as Fukuyama Castle to deter foreign naval threats, with three towers, sixteen gates, and a cannon armory.

After the Meiji Restoration, most of the compound was destroyed; the three‑storey wooden keep and some gates survived initially but the keep burned in 1949, and the main gate continues today as an Important Cultural Property, while a concrete replica keep was built in 1960 and used as the Matsumae Castle Museum.

The ruins and rebuilt structures are surrounded by Matsumae Park, a 220,000‑square‑meter public park that holds about 250 varieties and around 10,000 cherry trees, making it possible for cherry blossoms to bloom continuously for up to a month in spring and hosting a famous cherry‑blossom festival with food stalls and traditional performances.
