Verified Mazagon Fort

Dockyard, India

Mazagon Fort, located in the Mazagaon area of Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India, was a British fort built around 1680 as a strategic defense point amid ongoing conflicts with the Mughal-allied Siddis.

The fort was situated on Bhandarwada Hill near what is now the Joseph Baptista Gardens. It played a significant role during the 17th century when Bombay, then a group of small islands, was contested by the British and the Siddis allied with the Mughals. In 1689, the Siddi general Yakut Khan attacked and ultimately razed the fort in 1690 after a prolonged siege, part of broader conflicts for control over the region.

Following the fort's destruction, the area evolved into a vital dockyard and shipbuilding site, later established as Mazagon Dock in 1774 by the Wadia family, which became a crucial center for naval ship construction and repair in India. Today, remnants of the fort are no longer standing, but the site remains important historically, and the Joseph Baptista Gardens serve as a popular recreational spot in Mumbai.
