Medininkai Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress located in the village of Medininkai in Lithuania's Vilnius District Municipality, about 30 km southeast of Vilnius. Built in the first half of the 14th century, it was an important defensive stronghold of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and is considered the largest enclosure-type castle in Lithuania. The castle is known for its massive stone and brick walls, towers, and imposing main keep. Historically, it helped protect the region from attacks by the Teutonic Knights and other invaders, while later also serving as a residence for Lithuanian rulers. After centuries of decline and damage, Medininkai Castle underwent extensive restoration and is now managed as a cultural and historical site. Visitors can explore museum exhibitions, learn about the history of medieval Lithuania, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the restored tower.
