Site of Rokantiškės Castle

Vilnius, Lithuania, Lithuania

---

The Site of Rokantiškės Castle is a historic castle ruin located on a high hill east of Vilnius near the Vilnia River.

Believed to be one of the oldest castle sites in Lithuania, it was originally established in the 12th century and later rebuilt in the Renaissance style during the 16th century, serving as the residence of influential noble families. The castle changed ownership several times, eventually passing to the Pac family.

It was an important regional stronghold until 1655, when it was destroyed by Cossack forces during the Russo-Polish War and subsequently fell into ruin. Today, only the ruins and hillfort remain, but the site offers impressive views of the surrounding landscape and provides a fascinating glimpse into Lithuania’s medieval and Renaissance history. It is also notable as the only visible medieval castle ruin within the city limits of Vilnius.
