Meiji Jingu is a prominent Shinto shrine located in Shibuya, Tokyo, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. Completed in 1920, the shrine honors Emperor Meiji’s role in modernizing Japan during the Meiji Restoration, which transitioned the country from feudal rule to a modern state.

The shrine is set within a large, serene forested area covering 70 hectares, planted with about 120,000 trees donated from across Japan, creating a peaceful escape in the heart of the bustling city.

Visitors enter through a massive wooden torii gate and are greeted by tranquil pathways leading to the main shrine buildings, which were rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II.

The complex includes inner and outer precincts, with a treasure museum, memorial picture gallery, and areas for traditional ceremonies and festivals. Meiji Jingu is not only a spiritual site but also a cultural and historical landmark symbolizing Japan’s modernization and reverence for imperial heritage.
