Minakuchi Castle is a flat-plain Japanese castle located in the city of Kōka in Shiga Prefecture, built in 1634 as a grand rest house and fortified way station for the Tokugawa shogun traveling between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto.
It sits on the historic Tōkaidō highway, the main route linking the eastern and western capitals, and was designed partly on the model of Kyoto’s Nijō Castle, with stone walls, moats, and corner turrets that once gave it a striking reflection on the water, earning it the poetic name “Hekisui-jō” or “deep blue water castle”.
