Verified Mitsumine Castle

Sabae, Japan, Japan

Mitsumine Castle was a 14th‑century Japanese castle located on Mount Mitsumine in what is now Sabae town in Fukui Prefecture, and today only its ruins remain as a historic site.

The castle was built around 1337 during the Nanboku‑chō period, when Japan was divided between rival Southern and Northern courts, and was intended as a strong strategic stronghold on the mountain’s summit. It was held by Wakiya Yoshisuke, who was acting under the orders of Nitta Yoshisada, a leading general of the Southern Court.

In 1340, the Northern Court’s forces, led by Miyama Shigeyuki, attacked and besieged the castle; the siege ended with Miyama’s death and the complete destruction of Mitsumine Castle, after which it was never rebuilt. Over the centuries the site fell into ruin, and in modern times the remains are recognized as part of Sabae’s local history, with the castle ruins marked as a historical landmark within the town.

Unlike famous castles with standing keeps or large reconstructions, Mitsumine Castle is best understood as an archaeological and historical site that illustrates fortification methods and regional conflict during early Muromachi Japan.
