Miyako‑jima (often written Miyakojima) is a subtropical island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, known for its powdery white‑sand beaches, crystal‑clear turquoise sea, and relaxed, rural atmosphere. It is the largest of the Miyako Islands and lies about 300 kilometers southwest of Okinawa’s main island, reachable by flights from major Japanese cities and from Naha. The island is famous for beaches such as Maehama, which stretches several kilometers and is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, as well as for snorkeling and diving around coral reefs like Yabiji and along the coast. Landscapes include flat limestone terrain, sugar‑cane fields, coral‑lined cliffs, and scenic capes topped by lighthouses such as Higashi‑Henna‑zaki, often listed among Japan’s most beautiful views.
